Kick-Ass 3, written by Mark Miller and illustrated once again by John Romita Jr is the follow-up to Kick-Ass, Hit-Girl (review here) and Kick-Ass 2. So far only two issues have been released with a third due to follow very soon. Mark Miller himself has been quoted as saying that this volume will be the concluding chapter to the Kick-Ass saga, so how does it fare?
Following on from the ending of Kick-Ass 2 and the huge Super Hero/Villain brawl in times square, Mindy Mcready (Hit-Girl) is now in jail and has become somewhat of a martyr for the super hero cause. Meanwhile, the eponymous Kick-Ass, a.k.a Dave Lizewski has graduated high school and is continuing to dedicate his life to fighting crime. The Motherfucker is still alive, now in hospital under close guard by the authorities due to the events in Times Square.
The first issue is a lot of scene setting and helps re-establish the franchise as well as where all the characters are. Issue 2 gets the ball rolling more but focuses primarily on Chris Genovese/The Motherfucker, and an attempted assassination by Lieutenant Stripes (attempting to avenge the death of Colonel Stars.
Justice Forever have refused to help Kick-Ass free Hit-Girl from prison, but I think we’re all sure she can handle herself for now. It’ll be interesting to see how many more issues that storyline goes for, with this being the last volume, she can’t be in prison for the duration surely? I’m hoping for a quick bust out and one final confrontation with The Motherfucker and his new puppet master, his uncle ‘Don Genovese’.
The opening issues definitely set us up for a great ending and introduce some very intriguing plot points, one in the form of the afore mentioned Don Genovese and the other in the form of a mysterious woman who helps Kick-Ass bail out of a particularly Ass-Kicking situation, what are her motives? Is she to be trusted?
Kick-Ass 3 is as colourful as ever and once again John Romita Jr. has done a stellar job. There’s a lot of detail, which is something I love in a graphic novel (small confession, I’ve never been a fan of ‘classic’ comic illustrations like those seen in older graphic novels like The Dark Knight Returns). Everything is well laid out too with the panels flowing nicely.
The first two issues have set up the volume well so far, let’s hope it continues in this manner!

I believe there are going to be 5 parts because at the back of the hardcover edition of kickass 2 it says there are going to be 5 parts
Unless that referred to another spin-off? As far as I know Miller has confirmed that Kick-Ass 3 will be the final volume, which would make a total of 4 if you include the Hit-Girl run.
