It’s official, Warner Bros. and Zack Snyder have their Bruce Wayne for the upcoming Man Of Steel/Batman crossover. Lots of speculation had been flying around over who would take up the mantle of the the dark knight from Christian Bale, but now it has been officially confirmed as Ben Affleck. With the casting of Affleck who will be portraying an older more weathered batman it does lead me to believe that DC/WB may be looking to adapt Frank Miller’s ‘The Dark Knight Returns’ in some form, though i’d imagine given this is being penned as a Man of Steel sequel, we may get more of a focus on Superman as opposed to it being a Batman tale.
We knew we needed an extraordinary actor to take on one of DC Comics’ most enduringly popular super heroes, and Ben Affleck certainly fits that bill and then some.
The above quote was from Warner Brothers President Greg Silverman. Zack Snyder had the following to add:
(Affleck) has the acting chops to create a layered portrayal of a man who is older and wiser than Clark Kent and bears the scars of a seasoned crime fighter, but retain the charm that the world sees in billionaire Bruce Wayne, I can’t wait to work with him.
This casting is certainly slightly out of left field but I think he’s a great choice. He’s proved his acting chops recently with film’s like Argo and The Town, and I can completely see him pulling off a more dramatic Bruce Wayne, and hey, I’m sure he’ll be good in the suit too! He’s shown he has the physicality for it and to be honest, rather controversially, I never enjoyed Christian Bale as Bruce Wayne all too much.
Affleck will join Man of Steel’s Henry Cavill (read our review here) for the tentatively titled Batman Vs Superman in 2015.
